When someone holds a special place in your heart passes away unexpectedly, you want to do something special to keep their legacy and memory alive.  When we lost our dear husband and father suddenly on May 22, 2015, we realized losing him not only impacted our lives but the lives of many in and around the City of Annapolis.

Of the many things important to Shelley, such as providing for his family and always living a full and joyful life, he found great joy in serving and giving back to his community, especially working with and helping youth.

Affectionately known as Detective White in the City of Annapolis, Shelley never met a stranger and he had a smile that  lit up the room.  He was a man of great enthusiasm and a personality that made you think you were his closest friend. Shelley was always willing to help those in need and he did everything he could to make everyone he encountered smile. Those who knew Shelley, Jr. will always remember him for his smile and vibrant personality. No matter what was happening in his life, he was always positive and encouraging to those around him.

In honor of Shelley’s dedication to his community, my son Shelley C. White, III, and I established the Shelley C. White, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund. The fund is a 501 (c) 3 organization that was formed to provide a meaningful way to honor Shelley’s life by carrying on his legacy by impacting future generations. Since education is the gift that lasts a lifetime, our vision for the memorial scholarship reflects the impact and the vision Shelley had for the community where he lived and served. That Vision is for a community where at-risk or disadvantaged youth have the resources and opportunities needed to achieve their full potential and reinvest in their neighborhoods.

The organization awards scholarships to graduating high school seniors in Anne Arundel County who seek to attend college or learn a trade so they may one day give back to their communities as well. As the foundation continues to grow, Shelley C. White, Jr.’s legacy lives on through the education of the youth we serve, and through the impact he had on everyone who was lucky enough to have met him.
